Like Mother, Like Daughter

When you were little what was the main thing you wanted to do with your mom's clothes? If your answer is "play dress up", you might be on to something! Since you were little, you looked towards your mom as your role model and the person you always received advice from about everything. You wanted to be just like your mom, from the hair style, to the dress she was wearing, even the winged eyeliner. "Mommy and Me" clothing was introduced in the mid 1950's so girls could have their dream of dressing like their mom, and recently, "Mommy and Me" clothing has been coming back into style.

Now there isn't much history behind how this particular style came to be, but it's one that sure had an impact on fashion in America in the 1950's. Below are two pictures of ads that were normally found in magazines advertising the Mommy and Me style. In both pictures, the dresses are pretty much exactly the same. Almost no variation in pattern, color, or cut. As seen in the second picture, the detail goes down to even the small pink pocket and belt the two women are sporting.

This style lived through the 1970's but became less popular a little after that. Notice in the 1970's that fashion extended from more than just a dress. The women on the right are showing off a beautiful bright green pantsuit and collard shirt that were very popular during that decade. Even the color change is a big deal, because we go from colors that have more neutral tones to colors that make more of a statement. Retro, psychedelic colors were a major thing during the 1970's, because this was an era where fashion became more than just about the suburban housewife. This was a freer style and really allowed women to express themselves through their clothing.

Tragically, the style dissipated after the 1970's and was not seen much after that until recently. As we say in the fashion world "one day you're in and, one day you're out", and these styles went out, but are coming back in at full speed. In many department stores, you can find more Mommy and Me clothing, because moms want something that really allows them to connect to their children. This style is more than just showing off how cute you and your mom look wearing similar clothing, it's about the love you and your mom share and your bond and relationship. Something as simple as a matching dress can really bring two people together, no matter how different they are.

Now before I get too preachy, I have to state that here at Bridge Boutique, we also carry a Mommy and Me collection! Our main goal here at Bridge is to really "Bridge" the gap between new and old, and we feel like bringing this style into the store really makes everything come full circle to help us meet our goals. Pictured below are a couple are some of the styles we carry here at Bridge:

The first is our Zully Peasant Mini Dress. It's a beautiful color of blue and comes in a pretty pattern that's perfect for fall! Each dress has the exact same pattern, paying homage to the original 1950's Mommy and Me clothing.

Pictured next is our Sibia Cold Shoulders Dress and our Sibia Kids Dress. The actual cut of these dresses differ. In the adult dress the shoulders are exposed, but in the kids dress they are exposed. These dresses show more of a modern take on Mommy and Me clothing, but still have the same pattern and colors as each other. The poncho, shown in the first picture is our Polka Dot Poncho, and we feel that it's the perfect accessory for this dress.

We see how this particular style has evolved and how beautiful of a style it really is. It goes beyond outside beauty, to inner beauty. It's a beautiful style inside and out, because of its sentimental value. This goes beyond fashion, into to something more beautiful than words can describe.
