Tracking Trends: Kimonos

Whether traditional or modern, kimonos have been in style for many years, and are recently making a huge comeback with many places starting to carry more and more different styles of kimono. Just a little history behind the Kimono, the word "kimono' comes from the Japanese word for "clothing" and kimonos dated back as far as the Heian Period in Japanese history. There were many advantages to the Kimono, but the most important one was that it could be worn in all types of weather. It could be easily layered for warmth in the winter, or, since they were traditionally made with linen, they were very breathable and could be worn on warm summer days.

Traditional Kimonos look like this:

Notice the cut. Traditionally kimonos came in very few different cuts due to what was appropriate at the time. The coloring is very striking with very ornate patterns. Easy to catch the eye and almost too beautiful to look at, but kimonos, just like every other piece of clothing, have evolved from being very traditional to being a very urban statement worn by many. Now, kimonos can come in multiple styles!

You have long Kimonos, which show more of a traditional style

Kimonos that have that perfect pattern

Short Kimonos

Kimonos made of lace:

Kimonos have found their way into the modern world, and it is awesome to be able to wear a piece of history that has evolved into something so urban in chic. You may notice, that most things have changed about Kimonos, the cut, the style, the length, but one thing has pretty much stayed the same: the pattern. Even the Palooza Lace Coverup (the last picture shown) sports a floral pattern, because that was traditional to kimonos in the Heian Period. Kimonos weren't just  pieces of clothing, they were art, just as they still are and they should be treated and worn with such dignity.

Till next time
